The Surf Zone is a documentary that explores how the interest in surfing exploded in the early 1960’s and has continued to grow ever since. Most surf historians agree that the movie Gidget released in 1959 was the spark that caused the explosive growth in surfing. The movie itself however could not have been as successful in increasing the level of interest unless several critical conditions and environmental factors existed. The movie looks at the people, the conditions and other factors that contributed and continue to influence surfing culture.
We are about to start a crowdfunding campaign to help us raise funds to edit the movie and make it ready for release. During this campaign, we will release one video per day that will show and describe a well known or popular surf location in California. We will also publish other videos about our contributors.

Leo Carrillo is a popular surfing location in the southern part of Ventura County. This is an iconic surf location as there is a big rock right in the middle of the take off location. Great on a west or north west swell direction. The water is always cold and usually foggy so bring your wetsuite and be prepared to catch some long rights.

Del Mar is located about halfway between Orange County and San Diego. The beach is a long, wide and gently slopes into the ocean. the waves are best right near the parking lot and the park. When the swell is big, it can get pretty walled up but average swells and a medium tide provide some great rides. Del Mar is usually not too crowded so beginners and experts can find some waves.

The south bay has lots of great surf locations. One of them is Manhattan Beach. This is a beach break that fire mostly during the winter and spring months. The waves are fast, hollow and can get gnarly at times. It can also be very fun in the right conditions.

Seaside Reef is a great little reef break located in north San Diego County. This is a fast short board break that catches a swell from most all directions. Keep an eye out for a few pro surfers as they are seen here regularly. Bring your A game or you won't catch many waves.

pretty funny ! when the tourist or novice that's using this thing as a surfing guide. gets to the bottom of the hill and sees a ton of naked people!!! because nobody warned them it's a nude beach LOL
You forgot to mention the big problem with the place, the sharks and the current. There's commonly a boat from UC Davis tagging sharks at the mouth of the bay. One person has had not one but two shark encounters here, spooky stuff. It's not a question of if, it's when at this spot. Definitely not worth it for the crappy waves.
this spot is heavily localized by some guys who go right all day every day surfing the same waves doing the same thing and never leave to go surf lefts so they get the idea that they are amazing and therefore try to punk everyone out for "taking their waves" because they surf there everyday. its easy to surf the same waves over and over and develop a routine especially when surfing the same point all the time. been out there enough to see the same patterns and turns over and over.
